While the Packers are counting on Jimmy Graham, their high-priced acquisition in 2018, to have a much more productive season in year two, Green Bay has been far from content this offseason as they seek upgrades at tight end.The Packers have been active in the spring, deciding not to part ways with Graham after one season and eventually re-signing Marcedes Lewis, an under-utilized veteran last season. Lewis’ experience in Nathaniel Hackett’s Jacksonville offense and ability as a blocker should pay dividends in 2019 in both the running and passing games. Green Bay also brings back Robert Tonyan, who earned some first-team reps with the offense in the absence of Lewis during organized team activities a few weeks ago. Second-year player Evan Baylis from Oregon re-joins the team after arriving to Green Bay in late December.Green Bay figured to have a decent trio of returners heading into next season, but they have continued to add to the roster.First was the third-round draft selection of Jace Sternberger, a breakout performer at Texas A&M last season who is known primarily for his receiving skills. While Sternberger still is a bit raw in his development, he represents a long-term potential contributor to develop while Graham and Lewis are still on the roster. Yet, it would not be surprising to see him lined up in the slot or in red-zone situations, where he was a double-digit touchdown threat a year ago.Green Bay then put in a waiver claim for former New York Jet Jordan Leggett on May 22 before ultimately losing him in the claim order to Tampa Bay. Even at the time, it seemed as if the Packers were aggressively searching for extra bodies at tight end https://www.thepackersfanshop.com/hats , and that only continued as they signed Pharoah McKever on June 11. A second-year player whom Hackett got to see first hand as a member of Jacksonville’s practice squad in 2018, McKever was seemingly the kind of under-the-radar prospect who, at minimum, provided depth during training camp. From the outside, the move also made sense with the surprise retirement of undrafted signee Davis Koppenhaver at the end of May.But Monday’s newest acquisition, Michael Roberts, adds yet another layer to the Packers’ expanded search for tight ends. Green Bay was successful this time around in the waiver claim process, bringing in a third-year player who spent his first two seasons in Detroit and almost became a New England Patriot last week. A former fourth-round pick, Roberts is coming off of shoulder surgery but might still have some upside as a young player. That has been a trend under General Manager Brian Gutekunst: taking a chance on former draft picks of other teams. From here, it gets interesting for Green Bay’s tight end group. The Packers have not been shy about keeping four at the position in the past, but the handful of Graham, Lewis, Tonyan Green Bay Packers Hoodie , and Sternberger seem to be a predictable crew for the final 53-man roster. But would Green Bay keep another? The Packers have not gone the unconventional route and kept five tights since 2011, but a mix of skillsets and ages at the position could play a factor as camp proceeds. One thing is for sure: the Packers were just as uncomfortable with the play from their tight ends in 2018 as fans were. They certainly have beefed up the candidates for this year’s team, while adding potential contributors in the passing game. More competition is better than no competition, and the tight end position in particular is shaping up to be an intriguing storyline not only this spring, but throughout the summer. Since pass defenses started to get tabulated fully, Tramon beats Chuck as is the king." />Skip to main contentclockmenumore-arrownoyesAcme Packing Company homepageHorizontal - WhiteAcme Packing Companya Green Bay Packers communityFollow Acme Packing Company online:Follow Acme Packing Company on TwitterFollow Acme Packing Company on FacebookFollow Acme Packing Company on InstagramLog in or sign upLog InSign UpSite searchSearchSearchAcme Packing Company main menuFanpostsFanshotsSectionsPackersOddsAboutMastheadCommunity GuidelinesStubHubMoreAll 321 blogs on Horizontal - WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections The APC PodcastPackers Film RoomFantasy Football AdviceCDTShare this storyShare this on FacebookShare this on TwitterShareAll sharing optionsShareAll sharing options for:Tramon Williams & Charles Woodson sit atop Packers’ career ‘defensive touches’ leaderboardTwitterFacebookRedditPocketFlipboardEmailPhoto by Doug Pensinger/Getty ImagesEarlier this week, a few writers here at Acme Packing Company were thinking back on the greatness of some of the Green Bay Packers’ recent defensive backs. The discussion turned to wondering how many times during regular season games these players actually touched the football — either via interception, pass breakup, forced fumble, or fumble recovery. When turning to Pro Football Reference for data, however, I found that pass defenses — which consists of breakups plus interceptions — have only been tabulated since the 1999 season. Still, that gives us the full careers of several great Packers DBs to examine and compare. One might expect Charles Woodson to be the leader in this defensive touches category Elgton Jenkins Jersey , when considering the time scale on the useful numbers. He certainly is near the top, but he comes up just a bit short of the number one spot.Woodson arrived in Green Bay for the 2006 season after practically being an afterthought in Oakland the year before. Despite an All-Pro season in 1999, Woodson did not make a Pro Bowl in his final four campaigns for the Raiders. However, despite just six picks in those four years, Woodson eclipsed that in his very first season with the Packers. All told, 2006 saw Woodson record his largest number of defensive touches of the football of any season as a Packer. He intercepted eight passes, broke up 12 more, forced three fumbles, and recovered one for a total of 24. He would nearly match that number in 2009, recording 23 total that season en route to Defensive Player of the Year honors. All told, Woodson recorded 120 defensive touches on the football in his seven Packers seasons. Here’s a look at how that breaks down:Woodson Defensive TouchesYearGamesINTsNon-INT PBUFFsFRsTotalYearGamesINTsNon-INT PBUFFsFRsTotalInterestingly, Woodson touched the ball more in seven years with the Packers than he did in 11 years in Oakland. There, he had 27 picks http://www.thepackersfanshop.com/Darnell-Savage-Jr.-Jersey , 24 pass breakups, 18 forced fumbles, and 12 recoveries for a total of 113. (Note that there were no pass breakup numbers for his rookie season of 1998).However, as noted earlier, Woodson is not the career leader in defensive touches Packers history. That title belongs to Tramon Williams, whose 131 touches surpass even Chuck’s. He did not set that mark in his return to Green Bay in 2018, either; he already took the lead before he left in the 2014 season, at the time his eighth year with the team.In fact, Williams even matched Woodson’s single-season-high of 24, reaching that point in the 2010 season as the Packers won Super Bowl XLV. Here is the rest of the top ten, and remember that data for all categories is only available back to 1999. One other interesting note is that Al Harris holds the team single-season record in pass breakups with 19, a number he recorded in 2004.
