Tulsa, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - TaShawn Thomas poured in a season-best 25 points as 16th-ranked Oklahoma cruised to an 87-68 victory over in-state foe Tulsa at the Reynolds Center. Thomas went 9-of-12 from the floor and Isaiah Cousins knocked down five 3- pointers in a 21-point effort for the Sooners. Cousins added eight rebounds to help Oklahoma (6-2) easily handle a struggling Tulsa team coming off a home loss to Division II Southeast Oklahoma State. I thought our guys, from start to finish, were pretty solid on both ends of the floor, said Sooners coach Lon Kruger. They were a little sloppy, a little careless with the ball in the first half but really handled it well in the second half. ... Offensively, I thought we had really good flow in the second half. Shaquille Harrison was one of the Golden Hurricanes few bright spots, finishing with 21 points and five assists. Rashad Ray tallied 11 points off the bench for Tulsa (5-5). Were struggling with our confidence, said Tulsa coach Frank Haith. The chemistry with our bigs and our perimeter guys, were having a tough time with that. Against a really good team we needed to have more out of our front line and we werent able to get that. Thomas was a force right from the start, recording eight of his 16 first-half points during a 13-4 game-opening run by the Sooners, who never trailed in the period while building a lead as large as 13 points. Five straight Tulsa points, the last three on a layup and free throw from Brandon Swannegan, brought the Golden Hurricane within 20-18 with under nine minutes to go in the frame. However, Oklahoma countered with a 9-0 spurt, during which Cousins and Buddy Hield each canned 3-pointers, to quickly regain some separation. Tulsa managed to whittle the deficit down to 30-25 later in the half, but the Sooners scored the next seven points and eventually carried a 43-32 advantage into the break. Oklahoma kept its foot on the gas after the intermission, with Hield and Cousins both burying threes during an 8-0 flurry that pushed the lead to 55-36 just three minutes into the second half. Tulsa scored the next five points, but the Sooners answered with an 11-2 push that all but put the game out of reach. Thomas had four points during the burst, which Frank Booker capped with a layup to put Oklahoma up 64-43 with under 13 minutes to go. The Sooners led by at least 16 points the rest of the way. Game Notes The game featured a matchup between Oklahoma point guard Jordan Woodard and his older brother James, a guard for the Golden Hurricane. Jordan had a game- high nine assists, while James went just 3-for-13 from the field for nine points ... Oklahoma has won eight straight and 14 of the last 15 meetings between the schools, who squared off for the first time in Tulsa since 2008 ... Haith beat Oklahoma twice during the 2011-12 season while then at Missouri in the Tigers final campaign in the Big 12. The Canucks figured to be active prior to Wednesdays trade deadline, getting a jump on things the previous day when they dealt goaltender Roberto Luongo to the Florida Panthers for netminder Jacob Markstrom and forward Shawn Matthias. Keslers name was heavy in the rumor cycle going into the deadline, but no deal was done and the 29-year-old can now focus on trying to get the Canucks back into a playoff spot. They are currently two points behind the Stars for the second wild card position in the Western Conference thanks to losses in 10 of their past 11 games. Kesler leads the Canucks with 21 goals and is third on the club with 39 points, one back of both Henrik and Daniel Sedin. Daniel Sedin, though, is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury, further hindering an offense that has scored just eight goals in the previous eight games. Vancouver failed to light the lamp on Tuesday versus the Phoenix Coyotes, falling 1-0. Eddie Lack, the Canucks clear No. 1 goaltender with Luongo dealt, stopped 31 shots and gets the start again tonight. "We just couldnt get that last push and its just been that way for the last month or so," said Lack. "These games are important and we need to start putting together some wins real quick." The 26-year-old rookie is 9-10-4 in 26 games this season, but with a solid 2.05 goals against average and .926 save percentage along with three shutouts. Lack has never started versus the Stars, but ddid face them in relief on Dec.dddddddddddd 19 and stopped all seven shots faced in 17 1/2 minutes of action. The Stars have won both of their meetings with the Canucks this season, taking three in a row and six of the last nine encounters overall. Dallas, just one point ahead of both Phoenix and the Winnipeg Jets for the second wild card berth, failed to earn a point for just the second time in its last nine games (5-2-2) when it lost a 4-2 decision to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday. Coming off a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres the previous night, the Stars got goals from Alex Goligoski and Trevor Daley as well as 16 saves by backup netminder Dan Ellis. Ellis was making his first appearance since Feb. 1 and it turned out to be his last with the Stars as he was dealt to Florida for goaltender Tim Thomas, who became expendable when the Panthers acquired Luongo. Thomas will help lessen the load for Dallas goaltender Kari Lehtonen and provide veteran insurance in the crease after going 16-20-3 with a 2.87 GAA in 40 games for the Panthers. "Weve liked how hes played. Hes played very well. Hes experienced," Dallas general manager Jim Nill told his teams website of Thomas. "I think it is going to be good for Kari Lehtonen to see a guy, how he prepares, how he handles pressure. Kari is kind of growing into this role. Its Karis team still, but when we have back-to-back games or four games in six nights, he knows there is somebody that can go into the net and the team is going to continue to win. Thats very important." Lehtonen figures to get the start tonight and is 5-7-0 with a 2.92 GAA lifetime versus the Canucks. ' ' '
