Yes, sports arouse in us a mild flavor of ferocity and tribalism, but no one is going to die if the Cleveland Indians fail to make the postseason or lose the World Series. At least, I don’t think anyone will.I know that the front office of the team is still looking at ways to improve the roster before the regular season begins. None of us really want to trade Corey Kluber, and we would revolt if the return for a deal wasn’t delightful. They just re-signed Oliver Perez today, and there have been a few small deals that may pay off. However, this off-season is a far cry from flipping prospects for the game’s best reliever and doling out for a power bat after nearly winning the World Series.I know that baseball is a notoriously difficult beast to tame. Players get injured, suddenly lose all of their abilities, or suddenly find them after going to another team. You can’t predict the motions of this wild game, let alone slip a collar around its neck. Antonetti and the rest of the front office is doing the best it can with the resources available. I won’t belabor the point Addison Russell Jersey , but those resources aren’t as plentiful as some other teams in the league. I know that the organization doesn’t want to mortgage the entire future in the present. There’s nothing fun about rebuilding a baseball team from scratch unless you’re a divisional rival (Everybody wave at the Royals! What are they doing? Aren’t they cute?!). It takes years. It depresses attendance and fan loyalty. I’ve also heard that players don’t like losing 90-ish games for a few seasons. It’s understandable that they want to balance the desire to bring helpful free agents in against the hope that prospects develop well and contribute now and down the road. That being said, there’s one bit of this here quote that I can’t let go.[I]f we’re again in the position of being a contender around the Trade Deadline or later in the seasonI’m sorry. If?The Indians arguably own the best starting rotation in all of baseball. The left side of the infield is the greatest anyone’s seen in a generation, and possibly ever. I understand everything I wrote above, but how can you look at the talent on the roster right now and be content with the possibility of maybe being in contention?I’m sure that he’s not content. I bet on some level he’s livid about giving remarks like this. Antonetti may never have a team with this opportunity again, and if he could have re-signed Josh Donaldson, or sign Bryce Harper; or hell, even AJ Pollock, I think he would have. It’s one thing to acknowledge that the team can still be improved upon from its current state. It is another entirely to admit that the best strategy we can come up with is to coast across the surface of the weakest division in the league toward the playoffs. We’ll hope for some wind at our backs and that fortune favors us upon our arrival, but yeah, sure, this crew is probably good enough to make the voyage. Aye aye, captain.I’m not looking for the man to top “once more unto the breach, dear friends Sammy Sosa Jersey , once more / Or close the wall up with our English dead.” Still, as Indians fans, I think we’ve got every right to be pretty pissed off at the idea of the team holding its position — this position — while the rest of the league goes over, under, and through us. A look at what’s happening around the majors today:NO WORD YETThe Dodgers are still waiting for definitive word on how long closer Kenley Jansen might be out because of an irregular heartbeat. He was put on the 10-day disabled list Friday and manager Dave Roberts wasn’t sure if his absence would be 10 days or possibly even closer to a month — like it was when the right-hander went on the DL for the same thing seven years ago.“I’m hoping as soon as I can to get something, just for my peace of mind, the guys on the field — our peace of mind,” Roberts said. “His health is most important. Whatever they have to do, the doctors have to do, to protect him.”The 30-year-old Jansen was tied for the NL lead with 32 saves. In his absence, Roberts will use a closer-by-committee approach.ARENADO AILINGThe Rockies will see how star third baseman Nolan Arenado is feeling, a day after his early exit during a 5-4 win over the Dodgers at Coors Field. The Gold Glover has been bothered by a sore shoulder for a week and tweaked it while turning a double play in the third inning. He was covering second base on a play that was scored 3-5-3.“After it, I had trouble throwing Joe Maddon Jersey ,” he said. “It hurt too much to let it fly after that.”HOW MANY?J.D. Martinez has become the first major leaguer this season to top the century mark in RBIs — the Boston bopper is at 101 after driving in two more Friday night at Baltimore.Martinez set a career high with 104 RBIs last year while playing for Detroit and Arizona. The AL East-leading Red Sox have 45 games left for him to keep piling up the total.SEATTLE SURGEAfter beating Astros aces Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole on consecutive nights, the Seattle Mariners try to keep up their run at Minute Maid Park. Next, they’ll face Charlie Morton (12-2, 2.81 ERA). Wade LeBlanc (6-2, 3.81) starts for Seattle, which trails Houston by six games in the AL West.DOING DAMAGERonald Guzman has been a one-man wrecking crew against the Yankees this season. The Texas rookie has hit six home runs in 15 at-bats vs. New York — and only six more in 263 at-bats against everyone else. The 23-year-old Guzman homered three times Friday night in the Bronx, making him the first rookie to hit three in a game against the Yankees.NICE STARTCedric Mullins became the first Baltimore player to get three hits in his major league debut, also scoring three runs and driving in a pair during a 19-12 loss Friday night to Boston. The 23-year-old Mullins doubled twice while batting ninth and playing center field.All-Star Adam Jones has played center field since his arrival at Camden Yards in 2008. But the 33-year-old will finish the season in right field as the last-place Orioles look to next season and beyond. “This is about the future going forward,” manager Buck Showalter said.KEEP TRYINGBlue Jays right-hander Sam Gaviglio is 0-4 in 13 starts since winning in late May at Philadelphia. He hopes to end that skid when he pitches at home against Tampa Bay.
