With Juan Matas transfer secured, Manchester United appears to now be looking at another franchise-shaping deal. BBC Sport has reported that United has opened contract negotiations with Wayne Rooney in hopes of keeping him in red for the rest of his playing days. While concrete numbers of the possible Rooney extension were not disclosed in the BBC report, it called the offer one "that would make him the highest paid player in Uniteds history." UK paper The Telegraph has put the reported offer at £300,000 per week over a five year span. He is currently a year and a half away from the end of a deal that pays him £250,000 per week. Rooney, 28, was rumoured to be on the outs at United this past off-season when the team replaced long-term manager Sir Alex Ferguson with former Everton manager David Moyes. Rooney and Moyes had a tumultuous past when both were at Everton and the hiring sparked speculation that the striker could be on his way out of Old Trafford. However, Rooney has re-emerged as Uniteds best player in what has been a largely disappointing and injury-ravaged 2013-14 campaign for the defending Premier League champs. Rooney has scored nine goals in 16 League appearances, adding two more in five Champions League contests. United currently sits seventh in the Premier League table on 37 points, five back of sixth-place Everton. Liverpool did sign 19-year-old World Cup standout Divock Origi to a four-year deal from Lille. The striker would have helped Sturridge up front but the stipulation of their deal with Lille was that he would be loaned backed to his former club for one year. So Anfield will not see Origi until late 2015. The Reds however did shore up their midfield and defense during the off-season. Liverpool loaded up on more players from Southampton during the transfer window, signing central defender Dejan Lovren and attacking midfielder Adam Lallana from the Saints. Lovren is an organizer in the backfield, and a leader on the pitch. The Croatian national is an aggressive centre-back that brings a certain edge that was lost when Jamie Carragher retired in 2013. Lallana is fast exciting midfielder who knows how to create chances. Hell fit right in with the likes of speedy youngsters Sterling (19) and Philippe Coutinho (22) on his wings. The 26-year-old was named to the PFA Premier League Team of the Year last season with nine goals in 38 appearances. Although Lallana recently suffered a knee injury that will keep him out the first three games of the campaign, he will be poised to get back to form. The signings least talked about could end up being most beneficial. Liverpool signed two 20-year-olds: Emre Can and Javier Manquillo. Can played 29 games for Bayer Leverkusen, and the German midfielder registered three goals. What makes him versatile is his ability to attack and defend the ball.
