Of course the World Cup in Brazil is in a class of its own, but only five African countries will be involved.
There is also the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland - but they too are only restricted to former Britain colonies.
Compared that to the 53 states from the continent who will be keen to rule the roost at the Youth Olympics in China and clearly, Nanjing rates higher as a true global championships, which will be in August.
But before that, each continent will have its own version of the Youth Games and Africa will be in Gaborone Authentic Marcus Stroman Jersey , Botswana in May to select their athletes for the global showpiece.
The idea was born in 2006 to have the competition, but the very first African Youth Games only occurred in 2010. The international multi-sport event is held every four years to complement the current All-Africa Games.
Rabat in Morocco staged the first edition of the African Youth Games in July 2010 and attracted just over 1,000 athletes from 41 countries and regions participating in 16 sport disciplines.
However, Gaborone 2014 will cater for 2,500 young athletes participating in 20 sport disciplines. The Games cater for athletes aged between 14-18 years.
For the African athletes, the games will serve as a useful preparation platform for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China in August.
The International Sport Federations of athletics Authentic Troy Tulowitzki Jersey , basketball and swimming have also agreed to use Gaborone 2014 as a qualifying tournament for Nanjing 2014.
Four years ago, Tunisia's athletes won 25 medals (14 gold, nine silver and two bronze) on the last day to emerge as the best country.

"I believe we have the talent and the will power to propel them to success. We just need to get serious and we will be celebrating as the country's national anthem is recited in Gaborone and Nanjing. Kenya is a powerhouse in sports and that baton is always passed on from one generation to the other. The youth games in Gaborone and Nanjing will be a confirmation that the next line of production is churning out true world beaters," said Keino.
Boxing Association of Kenya (BAK) President John Kameta said they are ready to propel the discipline to its past glory. He wants that journey to start with the Africa Youth Games.
"If the nation's boxers hope to be successful, they must start their preparations as soon as possible," said Kameta.
"If Kenyans expect medals, then time is now for the national teams to start early preparations. No medals would come without hard work and support from the relevant authorities."
Initiator of these games Russell Martin Jersey , ANOCA - who govern Olympics games sports in the continent - injected 1 U.S. dollars in the organisation of the inaugural Africa Youth Games in Rabat, Morocco in 2010.
ANOCA President General Lassana Palenfo said they are in talk with the organisers to have all athletes accommodated in Morocco for free.
Organised just three months before the first ever Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, The first Africa Youth Games represent a unique opportunity for African Youth to assemble and rehearse for the major event.
"The Africa Youth Games was not only be limited to sports encounters for the young across the continent but also included a culture and education programme. The Africa youth games are a catalyst power of sport to promote friendship, unity and peace." said ANOCA President Intendant General Lassana Palenfo.
Over 20 sports disciplines have been selected to be competed in when Botswana hosts the second African Youth Games in Gaborone from May 22-31. This is according to Botswana African Youth Games Organising Committee (BAYGOC).
Also, four other sports - canoeing, rowing, triathlon Josh Donaldson Jersey , weightlifting and wrestling - may be competed during the Games depending on the successful consultation of BAYGOC, ANOCA and other national Olympic committees in Africa.
The discipline that will be held in Gaborone are athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, Canoeing, cycling Kevin Pillar Jersey , football, golf, judo, karate, netball, rowing, rugby Marcus Stroman Jersey , swimming, table tennis, tae kwon do, tennis, triathlon, volleyball and weightlifting.
In December, Tuelo Serufho the Gaborone Africa Youth Games CEO said since the awarding of the games to Botswana in March Troy Tulowitzki Jersey , and the commissioning of the organising committee in April, they had been busy making background preparations. Serufho is also the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) boss.
